I want my RCTV!

A demonstrator returns a tear gas grenade to riot police as clashes broke out during a protest in downtown Caracas May 29, 2007 against the decision by President Hugo Chavez to take the country's oldest television channel, Radio Caracas Television (RCTV), off the air and replace it with a state-run channel to promote his socialist programs. Thats not really true. The venezuelan goverment neglected to renew RCTV:s permission to send television through the state-owned ground network. This is because RCTV at numerous times have broken against the rules concerning nudity, advertising etc. They did also play an active role in the state coup (2002) against democaticly elected president Hugo Chavez. They RCTV can however still send through cable or through satellite.

The Venezuelan goverment was extremly kind towards the RCTV.

these are reactionary riots in support of the Venezuelan equivalent of Rupert Murdoch. Don't you get that?

They were tiny riots, totally overshadowed by the students who SUPPORT a democratic media – which means NOT controlled by a handful of oligarchs.

The new TV station isn't "supporting socialist programs", it's actually the first broadcast channel specifically for Afro-Venezuelans. The FIRST channel ever to serve over 50% of the population with more than soap operas and soft porn.

In the meantime, RCTV is on satellite and cable. It's not censored and this is just right-wing bullshit.

If anything, the owners and broadcasters of RCTV should have been put on trial and convicted for their part in the fascist military coup.

See "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" if you have any doubt about what pigs RCTV are.

I hope riotporn stops promoting riots for their own sake. What next, racial pogroms as "riotporn"?

Come on already.

I'm no "ra-ra go chavez!" idiot but posting these photos without context is ignorant and disappointing. If this wren't an ostensibly leftist-oriented site I wouldn't care that much but this is fucking ridiculous. Fuck RCTV and fuck anarchists who think anyone throwing a rock is some kind of hero.

Shutting down a state-critical TV channel is always wrong. It doesn't matter if it's a fascist regime that shuts it down or a authoritarian "left-wing" regime.

Smash the state! Smash authoritarianism!
